Any time our pets are ill, we feel their pain. Much like children, pets are unable to tell us where they hurt. That is why trusted veterinarians play such a crucial role in the lives of us and our pets. At Shelley Drive Animal Clinic, we have been providing residents of Tyler, TX with reliable veterinary care for many years. Our services range from preliminary puppy and kitten visits to senior care. We also perform pet ultrasounds.

Pet Prep for Ultrasounds

Does Your Pet Need a Pet Ultrasound?

Many pet owners don't think about chronic illnesses that are difficult to diagnose. Since pets can’t explain the source of their pain, veterinarians must rely on other technologies and tools to identify the source of your pet’s pain and immobility. An ultrasound machine sends sound waves throughout your pet’s body. The sound waves bounce back, producing an internal picture. Ultrasounds help our veterinarian diagnose a variety of conditions including:

  • Chronic vomiting or diarrhea
  • Weight loss
  • Changes in urinary habits
  • Fluid in the chest or abdomen
  • Pre-surgical testing
  • Chronic infections
  • Cancer
  • Pregnancy

Preparing Your Pet

There are a few things you can do to prepare your pet for the procedure:

  • Your pet should not have food or water for 8-12 hours before the scheduled ultrasound
  • Rarely, some pets may need sedation to be still during the procedure or they may need to be shaved to provide a clearer image.

If there are any other requirements or preparation before the ultrasound, our vet will let you know before the procedure.
