Coccidia is a single celled organism that lives in your pet’s intestines.   They are found more frequently in young animals but can be seen in adults.  Animals become infected by Coccidia by ingesting infected soil or substances in the area that may contain infected feces.  With light infections, no symptoms maybe seen, but with heavier infections the main symptom is diarrhea.   In very young pets, heavy infection can lead to death.  Diagnosis is confirmed by looking at a fecal sample under the microscope and identifying Coccidia.   Typically, this is performed at each monthly puppy/kitten exam and annually with wellness exams on adults.  There are medications that are given by mouth to treat for Coccidia.
